The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive and interdisciplinary focuses in research and teaching. In 2019, the "Africa Cluster of Excellence (EXC 2052)" started its work with funding from the Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State Governments. The aim of the cluster is to reshape African studies on both a conceptual and structural level. In addition to the University of Bayreuth, the Cluster has four other locations: University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria; Rhodes University, Makhanda, South Africa; Université Joseph-KI-ZERBO, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; and Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya.For the establishment of new forms of interdisciplinary digital research, the following position is available immediately

Data Curator - Project Consultations for Data Intake (m/f/d) (E-13, TV-L) (100%) 

The successful candidate will be employed until the end of December 2025. The position will be under the direction of the Vice Dean for Digital Solutions in the Cluster of Excellence. The main responsibility of the post holder is research data management in the Cluster as part of the Digital Research Environment (DRE).The DRE includes data management systems at the Bayreuth site and the four African partner universities, as well as privileged partner universities. The main tasks will be to coordinate the project consultations for data intake in Bayreuth and facilitate the cooperation with the colleagues at all Cluster sites.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Implementation of the data management system in the entire Cluster of Excellence
  • Project consultations for data intake and proactive participation in the transfer of research data
  • Support of the data intake process in DRE WissKI and DSpace
  • Support the curation of research data in close communication with researchers
  • Visits to partner universities

Your Profile:

  • Preferably a university Master's degree in Digital Humanities or Social Sciences
  • Very good knowledge of database systems, preferably DSpace
  • Knowledge of metadata and databases (preferably graph databases)
  • Very good communication skills (presentation, negotiation, explanation)
  • Experience working in project teams; good planning skills and a self-motivated, proactive attitude
  • Interpersonal/social skills and open-mindedness to work in an international environment 
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • On-site presence in Bayreuth required

Additional Assets would be:

  • Programming skills and experience in software development (e.g. Python, PHP)
  • Research experience or PhD in Digital Humanities or Social Sciences
  • German or French language skills
  • Knowledge of data protection, copyright and exploitation rights
  • Knowledge of thesauri and controlled vocabulary
